Audio only, never video

On iOS, Coati uses the screen broadcast permission to capture system audio. Video frames are immediately discarded by the app and never leave your device. On Mac, Coati captures audio via the BlackHole virtual audio driver — no screen access, no video. We have zero interest in what’s on your screen. We only care about what you’re listening to.

Nothing is stored

Audio passes through our relay server in real time and is not recorded, stored, or logged. Once a buffer is delivered to listeners, it’s gone. There is no archive, no playback history, and no way for us to reconstruct what was shared.

No data sold or shared

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties. Period. No ad networks, no data brokers, no partnerships that resell your information.

What we do store

We use Firebase Realtime Database for a few things: managing active session state (deleted when a session ends), aggregate analytics about session and listener counts (no personal content), and storing waitlist email addresses for people who sign up before launch. That’s it.

Broadcast permission (iOS)

The iOS broadcast permission (screen recording) is used exclusively to access system audio. iOS requires this permission because there is no audio-only capture API. Coati drops all video sample buffers immediately — they are never processed, transmitted, or stored. iOS displays a persistent red status bar indicator whenever a broadcast is active, so you always know when Coati is listening.

Microphone

If you tap the mic button during a session, Coati captures your microphone and mixes it into the outgoing audio stream. Mic audio is treated exactly like system audio: it’s transmitted in real time and discarded immediately after delivery. Coati never records or stores microphone audio. The mic button is clearly labeled and you control it.

Data deletion

If you’d like us to delete any data associated with you (such as a waitlist email), send a message to hello@coati.fm and we’ll take care of it promptly.
